Recognition of prior learning (RPL) for UTS Information Technology courses

This page provides you with detailed information on Recognition of prior learning (RPL) for UTS Information Technology courses.

Key points to note

• RPL applications are typically considered for subjects completed within 10 years prior to commencing a UTS Information Technology course.

Application deadlines

• Domestic applicants: You can submit applications upon receiving an offer of admission to a UTS Information Technology course and prior to the census date of your first enrolled session.

• International applicants: You can submit applications when applying to UTS, or no later than formal enrolment in a UTS Information Technology course.

Undergraduate RPL

Recognition of study from various institutions

• Another university: Relevant study from recognised universities may warrant RPL, potentially exempting certain core subjects or reducing elective requirements. You will be assessed individually, demonstrating the currency and relevance of your knowledge and skills.

• UTS College: Completing the UTS College Diploma of Information Technology could grant up to 48 credit points (equivalent to one full-time year) of RPL, depending on major and degree chosen.

• TAFE NSW: Diploma and Advanced Diplomas in ICT may be eligible for RPL. Agreements for RPL are detailed in the recognition of prior learning tool.

• Bachelor of Computing Science(honours), Bachelor of Computing Science, Bachelor of Artificial Intelligence only: You may be required to sit the Math Readiness Survey. If not passed, you will be enrolled in 35010 Foundation Mathematics, which may reduce RPL granted by 6 credit points

• Exemptions for business subjects: If you studied a Bachelor of Business or Bachelor of Information Technology, you may qualify for exemptions in certain business subjects if you hold a TAFE business diploma. Separate documentation must be provided to the UTS Business School.

Postgraduate coursework RPL

Exemptions and substitutions

• Exemptions: Core subjects may be exempted if you’ve previously completed them at UTS or another institution. Course specific limits may apply . Confirm if your course is eligible for RPL by exemption through course specific information pages on this site.

• Substitutions: Similar or equivalent subjects covered in previous studies or work experience may be substituted. These should align with the subject being substituted and typically represent a more advanced version.

RPL in postgraduate courses for undergraduate studies

• You may be eligible for up to 24cp of subject exemptions based on RPL on the completion of equivalent subjects in a UTS recognised undergraduate if the subjects previously completed are deemed by the faculty to be equivalent subjects in the course. This is restricted to core subjects.
• Additional RPL may be granted via subject substitution to an alternative/advanced postgraduate subject in a similar field of study. \

RPL for work experience

• Subject exemption: Work experience alone does not warrant subject exemption. However, significant employment-based experience in a core subject area may lead to approval for subject substitution with an advanced postgraduate subject.

Cisco Certifications

• Subject exemption: If you hold CCNA or CCNP certification with recent relevant industry experience, you may be considered for exemption in subject 32524 LANs and Routing. A Challenge Test may be required to demonstrate equivalent learning. The Challenge Test is administered once prior to the commencement of each session.
