-
Am I eligible to start PLT if I haven't finished my law degree yet?
Yes—if you meet the Early Start Rule. You can begin PLT before graduating if you:
- Have completed all your core law (Priestley 11) subjects, and
- Have no more than 2 electives remaining, and
- Receive LPAB approval.
Stand-alone LLB students undertake PLT on completion of the core law subjects and in the last session of their degree. - ### How do I enrol in PLT?
If you are a current UTS LLB or JD/GCPLP student:
PLT subjects will appear in My Student Admin once you’re eligible.\ You add the subjects directly in your enrolment.
\ Non-UTS students: You must first apply for admission to UTS before enrolling in PLT. - ### Is PLT offered online or on campus?
From 2026 onwards, PLT will consist of a blended course with:
- Compulsory on-campus workshops, typically in intensive blocks, including assessments
- Online learning components (readings, discussion board).
\ It will not be entirely online due to accreditation requirements. - ### What are the practical experience requirements? (15 days vs 65 or 20 days)
UTS is transitioning to a blended unified model:
- From 2026: Commencing students will follow a minimum 15-day practical work placement + 15 days on campus model.
- Students previously enrolled in the 65-day or 20-day stream have the opportunity to be transitioned to the new structure or complete their current enrolment in 75411 or 75426.
-
Does my paralegal or legal assistant work count toward my PLT experience?
Yes, paid or unpaid legal work may count toward your practical experience days if you do them concurrently, or following your PLT core subjects, and/or will be subject to the Practical Experience Rules and supervisor sign-off. - ### Are workshops compulsory? How are they scheduled?
Yes—attendance is compulsory. This is a requirement of the NSW Legal Profession Admission Board.
On-campus intensives are offered across allocated Fridays and Saturdays. Some assessments will be undertaken on these days.
Assessment tasks run during the subject, not in a separate exam period. - ### How long does PLT take, and when can I apply for admission?
Most students finish PLT in one semester (6 months).
Once you complete PLT:
- You can immediately submit your admission application to the LPAB for admission to the Supreme Court
- If approved, you will attend an admissions ceremony at the NSW Supreme Court
- Admission usually happens within 2–3 months, depending on ceremony dates and processing times.
-
Can I register for a tour of the UTS campus?
Yes, UTS runs free campus tours throughout the year.
Register for a UTS campus tour to secure a spot. - ### Is PLT covered by FEE-HELP?
FEE-HELP is available for eligible domestic students.
HECS-HELP does apply to undergraduate students undertaking PLT in the LLB.
HECS-HELP does not apply to those studying a postgraduate program such as the JD/GCPLP (Juris Doctor Graduate Certificate in Professional Legal Practice.
UTS double degree and JD students are eligible for a 10% alumni savings.
UTS PLT is comparatively priced and offers:
- University-taught curriculum
- Intensive workshops led by experienced practitioners and educators
- Smaller class sizes
- Academic support and integration with the UTS Law School.
