What you’ll study
Your research program is tailored to you. You’ll design it with your supervisors and Faculty of Science at the start of your PhD. With access to our networks, facilities and advanced training, you’ll have the opportunity to deepen your speciality.
Under expert mentorship, you’ll study your chosen related research topic over multiple years.
You’ll regularly present your research to a team of experts for assessment. Your final research thesis or practice-led research project (such as an algorithm or venture) will be examined for how you have uniquely contributed to your chosen field.

Course description
The PhD is a University-wide research degree which involves an intense period of supervised study and research, leading to an original and significant contribution to knowledge. This is a degree of the future and is a recognised path for those wishing to assume leadership positions in their field of specialisation.
This course prepares graduates for a leadership role in the widely diverse range of industries and organisations that rely on research or research skills to solve real-world problems, including but not limited to academia, business, government, cultural and community organisations. - ### Important dates
We accept applications for research degrees across the year. If you have confirmed funding through a faculty scholarship, external scholarship, or are self-funding, you can apply at any time. To be considered for a scholarship, you need to apply by the closing dates. - ### Scholarships and prizes

Scholarships for domestic students
Scholarships for international students - ### Course duration
The maximum course duration is four years of full-time or eight years of part-time study. Students can complete the course in less than the maximum time. Some courses have a strong preference for research undertaken at a full time pace.
The work may be carried out either on university premises or at a site external to the university, or some combination of both. Candidates are recommended to make contact with their supervisor(s) at least once a month to discuss the progress of their research. In some fields of specialisation, students may be expected to complete campus-based or other research activities on a prescribed basis. - ### Admission requirements
Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised master's by research or bachelor honours degree with first class or second class / division 1 honours, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate research studies.
Selection criteria also include: research potential, research experience, quality of the research proposal, alignment with the UTS Research Strategy and the strategic goals of the field of specialisation, and the Faculty's ability to offer appropriate supervision in the applicant's chosen field.
Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

Government-funded scholarship places available
As a recipient of the Australian Government’s Research Training Program (RTP) Fees Offset Scholarship, you do not have to pay tuition fees for up to the maximum period of candidature. However, even with this scholarship, you should expect ongoing costs that aren’t covered, like travel, training, and professional development. These costs can vary for each person, so it’s important to plan accordingly. Additionally, scholarships are available to help with your living expenses.
Important details
- The RTP Fees Offset Scholarship covers your tuition fees, but please note that it doesn’t include additional costs related to studying or conducting research.
Additional fees for domestic students
- If you take longer to complete your studies beyond the time covered by your scholarship, you’ll need to pay an Overtime Administrative Levy for each session (or part of a session) until you finish your degree.
- In addition to your tuition fees, you may need to pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF). This fee supports services and activities that enhance your student experience. If you're eligible, you can use a SA-HELP loan to cover this fee.
- Keep in mind that buying textbooks and other course materials can add extra costs.
