Study Architecture at UTS

The Bachelor of Design in Architecture is the first of two degrees needed to work toward becoming an architect. Students wishing to qualify for professional recognition as architects must also complete the Master of Architecture (C04235), gain professional experience, and pass the Architectural Practice Examination before applying for professional registration with the NSW Architect Registration Board.

The Bachelor of Design in Architecture program will equip you with the in-demand skills needed to plan and design the physical spaces of tomorrow. You'll acquire to-the-minute theoretical understandings, invaluable industry insights and crucial technical abilities, and even get the chance to learn hands-on in cities like Berlin, Los Angeles, New York and Tokyo.

What you’ll study

You'll be exposed to a variety of critical skills, preparing you for a career in Architecture or Design. You'll complete a number of core subjects, which will give you vital insights into the key history, perspectives, considerations and approaches of this discipline.  

Learning from industry leaders and professional practitioners, you'll get hands-on digital and model-building experience, curating your spatial and material awareness. You'll also get the chance to enhance your learning with your choice of a broad array of electives, with topics ranging from landscape narratives to exhibition design.

Typical course program

The outline below shows an example program for the Bachelor of Design in Architecture based on a full-time study load. Please note that your exact program may differ based on your unique circumstances, such as your commencement date, subject selections and recognition of prior learning.

Course structure

  1. 16 : Architecture core subjects
  2. 1 : elective
  3. 1 : Transdisciplinary elective

  4. First year

You'll undertake a number of core disciplinary units, establishing a foundational understanding of key history, theories and perspectives. You'll also get hands-on in the architecture studio, learning to compose spatial relationships and apply design tactics to small scale design projects. 2. #### Second year

Building on your fundamentals, you’ll continue your studio work in your second year, establishing essential skills in balancing project constraints and opportunities. You'll also hone your critical eye and learn about urbanism, Australian construction methods and environmental considerations. 3. #### Third year

To finalise your learning, you'll examine lighting and acoustics, complete a practical studio capstone and be exposed to the latest industry-led perspectives and debates. Your elective choices will allow you to enhance your learning in key areas of interest.

First year

Course highlights

In this course we teach advanced technical skills in digital design and fabrication, using both two- and three-dimensional mediums to sketch, draw and curate physical spaces. These capabilities are underpinned by the three pillars of decarbonisation, decolonisation and urban equity, with the intent of shaping you into a professional who puts humanity and sustainability first.

The undergraduate architecture studio is a flexible, open learning and teaching space available to all undergraduate students for making and presenting.

The photomedia studio is equipped with everything you need for professional-grade photography, including lighting studios, green screens and darkrooms for traditional black and white photographic printing.

The fabrication workshop is a large, well-equipped space where students and staff can safely build custom handmade models.

The soft model studio is a space for light-duty construction and assembly of models made from materials such as foam, foamboard, cardboard and balsawood.
