What you’ll study
You'll undertake a variety of foundational life sciences subjects, establishing your foundational knowledge of areas like chemistry, biology and anatomy. Then, in your major stream, you'll enhance your expertise through advanced subjects such as haematology, immunology, epidemiology and more.
You'll learn to diagnose disease, investigate the impact of specific pathologies at the molecular, cellular and organ level. Your practical training will include the processing of real tissue samples to identify diseases. You'll benefit from practical learning in our world-class tech-focused educational environments, the Hive Super Lab and UTS Science Super Lab.

First year
You'll kick-off your studies by completing core units within your Scientist's Tool Kit stream. Studying subjects like genetics, nature and evolution and physiology, you'll establish the thorough foundational knowledge required for your future studies. 2. #### Second year

Course description
This course is designed for aspiring medical science professionals seeking to impact human health and pursue further studies in health and science. Choose this course for a hands-on approach to medical science education, guided by leading researchers and practitioners at a top Australian science faculty.
What sets this course apart is the integration of health science with essential technical and communication skills, providing a comprehensive toolkit for success in the medical science field. You will specialise in either Medical and Health-related Sciences or Pathology, gaining expertise in areas such as pharmacology, immunology, and disease treatment.
You will acquire knowledge in diagnosing diseases, developing medical innovations, and communicating complex scientific information effectively. Learning is dynamic and interactive, combining lectures, labs, and industry projects with opportunities for internships.
You will learn in the world-class Hive Super Lab and UTS Science Super Lab, two collaborative, tech-driven learning environments that support simultaneous teaching of multiple classes in one space. If you choose a Medical and Health Sciences major, you'll also have access to the Surgical and Anatomical Science Facility for the ultimate hands-on learning experience.
Course features
- Complete a series of common core subjects that underpin all undergraduate UTS Science degrees. For instance,Data, Design and Decisions and Scientific Perspectives for Global Issues are designed to equip students with a toolkit of technical and workplace skills, preparing them to thrive both at and after uni.
- Choice of major:
- There are two majors on offer as part of this degree. Course content is common to both majors throughout first year; from there, students specialise in their preferred area of medical science.
- Medical and Health-related Sciences: Known as the people side of medical science, this major covers pharmacology, immunology, haematology and pathophysiology and their application to critical and emerging areas of the profession. Study personalised medicines, evidence-based medicine processes, and medical devices and diagnostics gaining the skills to deliver new innovations that positively impact human health.
- Pathology: This major is focused on the understanding, detection and treatment of disease and infection using industry-standard technologies in immunology, microbiology, biochemistry and molecular biology. Students learn to diagnose disease; investigate the impact of specific pathologies at the molecular, cellular or organ level; and identify, prevent and treat infections, as well as limit their impact on society. Students also gain firsthand experience with a range of blood and tissue testing approaches and biomolecular sensing techniques – skills that are in high demand in the booming pathology laboratory sector.
- Medical Laboratory Professional (fourth year): Eligible students who complete the three-year Pathology major can apply for selection into the Bachelor of Medical Science (Medical Laboratory Professional).This fourth-year program delivers industry-aligned technical skills development and extensive professional experience through a laboratory placement with our industry partner NSW Health Pathology, that equips students for a diversity of roles in the medical laboratory sector.
- Free electives: Students can customise the course to suit their personal or career aspirations. They can enrol in an international exchange, tailor their learning with a choice of subjects from any UTS faculty or gain hands-on experience in a diagnostic laboratory with the Professional Experience in Medical Science elective .

Students can complete the course over three years full time or six years part time. Part-time students are required to attend some classes in daytime hours. - ### Admission requirements
Applicants must have completed an Australian Year 12 qualification, Australian Qualifications Framework Diploma, or equivalent Australian or overseas qualification at the required level.
Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

All offers for domestic undergraduate students are for Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP).This means the Australian Government contributes to your education costs, and you pay the remaining tuition fees, known as the student contribution. For me, a scientist is a person who makes a real life impact in the lives of people.
It's definitely exciting. And I think knowing that you're making a difference and that you're making a change in people's lives is actually really motivating.
My name is Amna Zahoor, and I'm a UTS alumni.
I graduated from UTS in 2016, and I studied a Bachelor of Medical Science degree at UTS. And then I did a honors degree collaboration with UTS and the HRI.
Currently I'm working at Syntara as a research scientist.
I chose UTS because of the focus on the technology aspect. The vibe was very innovative.
It was friendly as well and focused, but at the same time very interactive.
What I wanted to do was to do something that would be translated into the clinical world and make a difference in the lives of people.
The facilities at UTS were very state of the art, very top notch facilities.
And they really resonated and aligned with what I'm doing at Syntara as well.
The practical sessions that we had with the demonstrators, they were very informal, very hands on, and laid the foundation for me to be able to build my career here, at Syntara in the real world.
Amna was immediatley job ready because she the foundations of science, but also the technical abilities to get into the lab and actually get the work done immediately.
Because we have such a longstanding, very close relationship with UTS scientists, we know the quality of the research that they're doing and we know the quality of their teaching.
So the graduates that are coming out of UTS actually have all the right background for us, to being employed.
I think what UTS graduates all share is this common denominator of having this drive and passion to make a difference.
