The UTS Staff Giving Program exists to ensure students can successfully complete their tertiary education, regardless of cultural, social or financial barriers.

For nearly two decades, UTS staff have donated more than $2 million through the UTS Staff Giving Program. Thanks to the incredible generosity of this community and the university matching donations dollar for dollar, thousands of UTS students have received critical support to complete their education through financial assistance and pastoral care.

One of those students is Soph-ea Moeln. As a single mother of three children, Soph-ea was determined to build a better life for herself and her family and enrolled at UTS to pursue a Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences. But her journey was fraught with many pitfalls due to financial hardship.

With the hope of securing support to complete her degree, Soph-ea applied for an equity scholarship for students experiencing financial hardship – a cause funded by the Staff Giving Program.

The money couldn’t have come at a better time. She spent it to install Wi-Fi at home. She got proper glasses from the optometrist and bought noise-cancelling headphones. She was able to create a dedicated space at home equipped with everything she needed and they proved a game-changer for her studies and academic performance.

I truly believe in angels”, says Soph-ea. “And for me, the UTS community has been my group of earth angels — they came to my rescue when I needed it the most, providing support and encouragement at every step. Thanks to them, my kids can now thrive and have the resources they need to succeed.
