## Oliver has found his passion in IT and the benefits a cooperative scholarship brings.

When Oliver Guerreiro was exploring his study preferences in year 12, a family friend recommended the Bachelor of IT Cooperative Scholarship to him. He was drawn to the program's focus on leadership and innovation.

After completing a questionnaire on his IT passions, Oliver was interviewed for the program. On the day his ATAR was released, he received an offer to join the scholarship to study for a Bachelor of IT.

“It was exciting to receive my offer so quickly. I felt confident in the path I had chosen. I liked the idea of combining business and technology skills to shape my experience.”

### Practical, on-the-job experience

As part of the program, Oliver gained practical experience in information technology during his studies.

“The main reason why a lot of students do the BIT program is the internships. You get two six-month internships at sponsoring companies, and you get to choose whether to do technical or non-technical work. It’s really engaging and enlightening.”

Oliver completed an internship at the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) and is currently interning as a software developer at Origin Energy. These experiences are invaluable and will help him to be industry-ready in the future.

### Building friendships

Being part of the scholarship program has allowed Oliver to form friendships within its cohort.

“That is one of the best parts of the program. We study together and hang out after class too.”

If Oliver could advise his younger self, he would encourage volunteering at small tech companies and immersing himself more in technology skill sets.

“Take opportunities to volunteer at different tech companies, participate in hackathons, or even do some coding in your free time. Anything that helps to show your passion.”

### About the scholarship

The Bachelor of Information Technology Cooperative Scholarship at UTS enables students to gain an understanding of both business practice and technical skills in IT and computing. The program offers a unique blend of academic coursework and industry placements, supported by leading technology industry partners.
