What you'll study
This highly customisable degree is completed over just four subjects, allowing for maximum flexibility to fit your unique goals and outcomes. You'll complete two subjects of your choice in either the Law or non-common Law streams, curating your learning to your professional interests. \ \ Additionally, this course will see you undertake research preparation, developing your capabilities for postgraduate project-based work. You'll then complete an 8–10,000-word paper on an approved topic of law, deploying your newfound skills to create an original and self-directed research piece in the format of your choice.

Course description
This course is for law graduates and gives you the opportunity to build specialist legal skills in your area of professional practice. Choose this course for its unique blend of practical and research capabilities, delivered by a mix of seasoned legal practitioners, industry experts, dedicated academics, and guest lecturers.
The course is highly customisable. You will complete two research subjects that will deepen your knowedge of law in an area relevant to your area of interest.
You can then choose electives in a wide range of areas including finance, human rights, law and technology, and intellectual property. You'll gain specialised knowledge along with robust research skills that are essential in the legal profession.
As a valued member of our postgraduate community, you will have access to a range of facilities, including our exclusive UTS Law postgraduate student lounge that provides a dedicated study and relaxation space for our postgraduate students.
The degree is highly customisable. Students complete 24 credit points of study based on their personal or professional interests, choosing from a wide range of law electives including finance, patent, insurance, human rights, copyright, family, international and common law.
Course content is delivered by a mix of practising law professionals, full-time academic staff and international visiting academics, giving students access to a wide range of expertise and perspectives on the study and practice of law. Cross-institutional study in Australia and overseas is encouraged as part of this degree. - ### Important dates

Scholarships for international students - ### Course duration
The course can be completed in a minimum of a half year of full-time or one year of part-time study. Subjects may also be available in Summer session. - ### Admission requirements
To be eligible for admission to this course, applicants must meet the following criteria.
Applicants must have one of the following:
- Completed Australian Bachelor of Laws, Juris Doctor, or doctorate of Law, or overseas equivalent
OR
- Completed NSW Legal Profession Admission Board (LPAB) Diploma in Law AND A minimum of 1 year full-time, or equivalent part-time, relevant legal experience
OR
- Completed Australian Graduate Certificate in Laws or Australian Graduate Diploma in Laws, or overseas equivalent AND Capacity to study the course demonstrated through a minimum of 1 year full-time or equivalent part-time relevant professional work experience
OR
- Completed a legal qualification supported by evidence the qualification enables admission to practise as a legal practitioner in Australia
OR
- Completed overseas legal qualification supported by evidence the qualification enables admission to practise as a legal practitioner in an overseas jurisdiction (excluding a Shari'a law degree) AND Capacity to study the course demonstrated through a minimum of 1 year full-time or equivalent part-time relevant professional work experience
Supporting documentation to be submitted with the application
For applicants who need to demonstrate professional work experience or capacity to pursue this course:
- Curriculum Vitae AND Statement of service in one of the following formats:
- A 'Statement of Service' provided by the employer
- A completed 'UTS statement of service' signed by the employer
- A statutorydeclarationconfirming professional work experience (for Australian Residents only)
- An official letter from the applicant's accountant or solicitor on their company letterhead confirming the applicant's professional work experience or engagement with the business, duration of operations, and the nature of the business
- A business certificate of registration in original language and English (e.g. provision of ASIC documentation or ABN or similar documentation for Australian Businesses)
- Personal statement (approximately 300 words)outlining relevant professional work experience and reasons to pursue this course.

As a postgraduate student, you'll be responsible for covering your own tuition fees.

- Indicative first-year tuition fee: $20,290.00
- Indicative total tuition fee: $20,290.00
You can choose to pay your fees upfront per session, or if you’re eligible, you can defer them using a government FEE-HELP loan. This loan helps you cover all or part of your tuition fees. Keep in mind that applications for this loan are specific to each course.
Additional Costs
Your tuition fees do not include:
- The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF), which supports student services and activities. If eligible, you can defer this fee using SA-HELP.
- Textbooks, materials, and other course-related costs.
- Any applicable payment processing fees (e.g., credit card surcharges).

- The indicative tuition fees above are based on full-time study (1 year = 48 credit points).
- Your actual fees depend on the year you enrol, your study load and the subjects you choose. Some subjects fall into different student contribution bands.

As a recipient of the Australian Government’s Research Training Program (RTP) Fees Offset Scholarship, you do not have to pay tuition fees for up to the maximum period of candidature. However, even with this scholarship, you should expect ongoing costs that aren’t covered, like travel, training, and professional development. These costs can vary for each person, so it’s important to plan accordingly. Additionally, scholarships are available to help with your living expenses.
