## Study Migration Law

Open to both law and non-law graduates, the UTS Graduate Diploma in Migration Law and Practice is the first step to an impactful, people-focused career as an immigration advisor. Unique in its approach, this course can be completed in just one year and combines essential theoretical and legal knowledge with hands-on experience, helping you build crucial practical competencies.

You'll be mentored by industry experts, giving you up-to-date insights and advice. Delivered entirely online, you'll have the ultimate flexibility to undertake the course content at the time and pace that suits you. On graduation, those of you who intend to register as Australian migration agents will be eligible to sit the Capstone Assessment.

## What you'll study

In this program, you’ll acquire acute knowledge and advanced practical skills in the field of migration law. Through just six subjects for law graduates or eight for non-law graduates, you’ll get crucial insights into Australia’s migration system.

A range of integrated assessments and tasks will see you learn about the validity and eligibility criteria for different types of visas. You’ll study complex migration matters, including visa application refusals, visa cancellations, merits and judicial review processes, legislation and policy and other critical and up-to-date aspects of migration law.

## Industry accreditation

The prescribed knowledge requirements for registration as a migration agent with the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA) in Australia can be fulfilled by completing all accredited subjects in this course and passing an external capstone assessment approved and facilitated externally by the Office of Migration Agents Registration Authority.

- ### Course description

  Developed by migration experts, the online Graduate Diploma in Migration Law and Practice offers flexible options for non-lawyers to gain required knowledge to register as Australian Migration Agents, and for lawyers to work in the specialist field of migration law. Career options include working as an immigration advisor in the for profit and not-for profit immigration advice sectors and working in Australian Government departments and Tribunals. Lawyers may also represent clients seeking judicial review of migration-related decisions.

  The course is entirely online, allowing you to study when and where you choose. Extension opportunities such as Mentoring, Tutoring, Oral Skills Development and Approved Internships help ensure your success.

  If you are not a practising lawyer, you need to successfully complete eight subjects to obtain your Graduate Diploma in Migration Law and Practice which is one of the eligibility requirements to sit the independent Capstone Assessment required to register as an Australian Migration Agent.

  If you are a lawyer who holds a current Australian legal practising certificate you need only successfully complete six subjects to obtain your Graduate Diploma in Migration Law and Practice. You do not need to sit the independent Capstone Assessment or register as an Australian Migration Agent to lawfully provide immigration assistance.

  On completion of this course, students intending to work in the area of migration practice have the required knowledge and skills to sit the Capstone Assessment in order to be registered as an Australian migration agent.

  **Obtain your Graduate Diploma in Migration Law and Practice by completing eight subjects**

  Students intending to sit the Capstone Assessment (approved and facilitated externally by the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority) to satisfy the prescribed knowledge requirements for registration as an Australian migration agent obtain their Graduate Diploma by successfully completing eight subjects.

  **Lawyers: Obtain your Graduate Diploma in Migration Law and Practice by completing six subjects**

  Lawyers holding a current Australian legal practising certificate are not required to pass the Capstone Assessment or register as Australian migration agents to lawfully provide immigration assistance. They can obtain their Graduate Diploma by successfully completing six subjects.

- ### Course duration

  The standard course can be completed in one year of full-time or two years of part-time study. There are three intakes a year (in Autumn, Spring and Summer sessions).
- ### Admission requirements

  To be eligible for admission to this course, applicants must meet the following criteria.

  Applicants must have one of the following:

  - Completed Australian bachelor's degree or higher qualification, or overseas equivalent, in any field of study

  OR

  - Capacity to study the course demonstrated through a minimum of 2 years’ full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional work experience

  **Supporting documentation to be submitted with the application**\
  For applicants who need to demonstrate capacity to pursue the course:

  - **Curriculum Vitae** AND **Statement of service** in one of the following formats:
    - A 'Statement of Service' provided by the employer
    - A completed 'UTS statement of service’ signed by the employer
    - A statutory declaration confirming professional work experience (for Australian Residents only)
    - An official letter from the applicant’s accountant or solicitor on their company letterhead confirming the applicant’s professional work experience or engagement with the business, duration of operations, and the nature of the business
    - A business certificate of registration in original language and English (e.g. provision of ASIC documentation or ABN or similar documentation for \
      Australian Businesses)
  - **Personal statement**  (approximately 300 words) outlining professional work experience and reasons for pursuing the course.

  Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

  **English language requirements**

  IELTS Academic: overall 6.5, writing 6.0
  TOEFL iBT: overall 79, writing 21
  UTS College AE5: Pass
  Pearson PTE: overall 58, writing 50
  Cambridge C1A/C2P: overall 176, writing 169
- ### Domestic course fees

  **2026 Indicative tuition fees for domestic students**

  As a postgraduate student, you'll be responsible for covering your own tuition fees.

  **2026 Tuition Fee**

  - **Indicative first-year tuition fee:** $29,996.00
  - **Indicative total tuition fee:**  $29,996.00

  You can choose to pay your fees upfront per session, or if you’re eligible, you can defer them using a government FEE-HELP loan. This loan helps you cover all or part of your tuition fees. Keep in mind that applications for this loan are specific to each course.

  **Additional Costs**

  Your tuition fees do not include:

  - The Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF), which supports student services and activities. If eligible, you can defer this fee using SA-HELP.
  - Textbooks, materials, and other course-related costs.
  - Any applicable payment processing fees (e.g., credit card surcharges).

  **Important Information**

  - Fees are shown in Australian Dollars (AUD).
  - The indicative tuition fees above are based on full-time study (1 year = 48 credit points).
  - Your actual fees depend on the year you enrol, your study load and the subjects you choose. Some subjects fall into different student contribution bands.
  - You can calculate your student contribution based on the amounts listed in the student contribution table

  **Information for Masters by Research students:** **Government-funded scholarship places available**

  As a recipient of the Australian Government’s Research Training Program (RTP) Fees Offset Scholarship, you do not have to pay tuition fees for up to the maximum period of candidature. However, even with this scholarship, you should expect ongoing costs that aren’t covered, like travel, training, and professional development. These costs can vary for each person, so it’s important to plan accordingly. Additionally, scholarships are available to help with your living expenses.

  **Important details:** The RTP Fees Offset Scholarship covers your tuition fees, but please note that it doesn’t include additional costs related to studying or conducting research. - ### Inherent requirements

  Inherent requirements are academic and non-academic requirements that are essential for successfully completing a course at UTS. - ### Professional recognition

  The prescribed knowledge requirements for registration as a migration agent with the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority in Australia can be fulfilled by completing all accredited subjects in this course and passing an external capstone exam approved and facilitated externally by the Office of Migration Agents Registration Authority ([OMARA](https://www.mara.gov.au/)).
- ### Recognition of prior learning

  Applicants who have completed subjects in equivalent migration law and practice courses at Griffith University, Victoria University, Western Sydney University or Australian Catholic University may be granted up to a maximum of 18 credit points of credit towards this course. Applicants who have attained a law degree and who have been admitted to practise law in a common law jurisdiction may be granted exemptions for [70121](https://coursehandbook.uts.edu.au/subject/2026/70121) Migration Agent Skills. Applicants are required to provide evidence of admission to practise, e.g. a practicing certificate or equivalent from their home jurisdiction, with their RPL application. Applicants who provide evidence with their RPL application that they hold a legal practicing certificate in an Australian jurisdiction may be granted exemption from [78305](https://handbook.uts.edu.au/subject/current/78305) Migration Law in Practice.

  This course is only available by distance mode in the Summer, Autumn and Spring sessions. International students are not eligible for a student visa to study this course in Australia.
