Biotechnology has been a growth industry for probably 30-40 years.
Students who come into biotechnology programmes today are going to be reaping the benefits of that rapid expansion, have investment that Australia is now making.
So practical scientific training is at the heart of all of our science degrees.
Labs are cutting edge. UTS really focuses on students getting hands on experience. That's what UTS is known for.
We have academics and teaching associates that are expert in the field and they teach these students and guide them into excelling in the studies, getting smart, motivated people into the position where they can do cutting edge research.
It benefits everybody. I really want to make a difference in the cancer treatment research in the future and that's why I'm doing biotechnology in UTS.

What’s the difference between biomedical and medical science majors and named degrees?
One is a specialised or named degree, such as the Bachelor of Medical Science, while the other is a Bachelor of Science degree with specialised majors.
The Medical Science degree allows you to choose from 2 majors and likely requires a higher selection rank for entry. The Bachelor of Science offers more flexibility if you want to change majors. - ### What’s the difference between the Bachelor of Molecular Biotechnology and the Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology)?
The Bachelor of Molecular Biotechnology offers majors in Medical Biotechnology and Environmental Biotechnology, as well as more cross-disciplinary subjects in both business and law.
The Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology is a more flexible degree. If you're not sure what you want to specialise in, the Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology – or any of its majors – is a safe bet. - ### Can I transfer to UTS from a different university?
Yes, although you will need to apply. Application information is available for domestic applicants and international applicants.
If you transfer to UTS, you may be able to receive credit towards your new course based on your previous study through recognition of prior learning (RPL). - ### I have a previous qualification in a different field – will this support my application?
If you have studied a previous qualification, it can be considered for admissions purposes. Visit admissions and eligibility for more information.
You may also be eligible for credit towards your new course through recognition of prior learning (RPL). - ### Can I apply even if I don’t have the required selection rank?
Yes, we have numerous entry schemes and admissions pathways to support applications from students who would otherwise not meet the course entry requirements.

Whether you can defer depends on several factors. Some courses do not allow you to defer, and you cannot defer if you commence your course in the Spring or Summer session.
Visit deferring an offer for more information. - ### Is it possible to study part time?
Domestic applicants can study part time by enrolling in a less than full-time study load. Visit study load for more information.
If you’re an international student on a student visa, you must maintain a full-time study load. If you want to study part time, apply for permission to reduce your study load. - ### Is PLT offered online or on campus?
From 2026 onwards, PLT will consist of a blended course with:
- Compulsory on-campus workshops, typically in intensive blocks, including assessments
- Online learning components (readings, discussion board).
\ It will not be entirely online due to accreditation requirements. - ### Can I study a UTS subject if I’m a student at another university?
Yes, although you will need to apply. If you’re studying at a different university, cross-institutional study allows you to enrol in UTS subjects and receive credit for them towards your course.
