UTS Juris Doctor transcript

I really enjoy how the law can be applied, how it can problem solve and how you can come up with creative solutions to challenging issues.\ I'd always planned to do law when I was young and I'd reached a time in my life and career where I was ready for a new challenge, ready to do something for me, something with real world impact.\ I always wanted to do something bigger than myself, to help others, and maybe even to help change the world.\ Studying the Juris Doctor at UTS was a truly meaningful step in that direction.

I really appreciated studying law as a mature age student.\ UTS really embraces the diversity of their Juris Doctor cohort and is flexible with how you arrange your study.\ I wasn't just surrounded by students, I was completely immersed with professionals with real life experiences from diverse backgrounds.\ Nurses, doctors, accountants, scientists — all wanting to learn and make a difference.\ From the first year of the Juris Doctor, I was inspired by my lecturers and tutors to think differently about everyday issues impacting society, through to complex legal problems.\ Being on campus is engaging and inspiring, and it's easy to find other students who are as motivated and passionate as you are.

The Juris Doctor at UTS is pragmatic and future focused.\ From the outset, I knew how relevant the degree is to the real world, and it gave me the skills I needed to become a technology lawyer.\ Problems we're trying to solve and help our clients with are often emerging for the first time.\ When I enrolled in the course, I didn't know I would start a business years later, but studying the Juris Doctor made the transition so much easier.\ It has been the ultimate training ground for me to become the person I am today.\ The Juris Doctor has shown me how I can leverage my experience in a new career path, and that the pathways are limitless.

UTS alumni stories: Francisco Widjojo transcript

After graduating, I was working as a corporate lawyer in Sydney.\ I was helping large companies acquire other businesses and raising money in the equity markets.\ That’s when I started to see the real growth of Indonesia.\ I was trying to figure out, where is Indonesia going?\ Where do I see myself, as this third culture kid with international experience?\ How could I contribute to the growth story of Indonesia?

We started Arkblu Capital so we could directly invest in the next generation of homegrown Indonesian tech companies and venture capital funds.\ As Managing Partner, I basically oversee our entire investment process, from sourcing to deal execution to deal support.

During my studies, obviously I learnt the technical components of law and business, but I think the most important aspect is that I learnt how to think.\ UTS is very practical.\ At uni we created financial models, we deconstructed different businesses.\ That critical thinking and problem-solving ability, I think is the number-one thing that I received from an Australian education.

Another thing that drew me to UTS was its strong international focus.\ The international leadership opportunities at UTS really allowed me to have a broader view of the world.\ I think as the world becomes a lot more globalised and integrated, being able to understand and interact with people from all around the world is so important.\ And it's those global connections that have really allowed me to thrive.\   \  \  \  \  \

UTS Juris Doctor – Endless possibilities transcript

I'd always planned to do law when I was young, and I'd reached a time in my life and career where I was ready for a new challenge, ready to do something for me, something with real world impact.

I've really appreciated studying law as a mature age student. UTS really embraces the diversity of their Juris Doctor cohort. Everyone comes with their own experience, wanting to expand on their current knowledge and with the freedom to develop new interests.

UTS is practical and flexible with how you arrange your study. You can make it fit with your life. Being on campus and learning from students and experts in the field is so engaging and inspiring. You begin to see law in a whole new light.

The subjects are varied and challenging, but I haven't done one yet that I haven't enjoyed. It's so important to be open-minded as it's given me new career interests, both within my current field and beyond.

I'm really passionate about the intersection between law and health, and the Juris Doctor has really shown me how I can leverage my experience in a new career path. I've learned that the Juris Doctor has application in just about every field, and in fact the pathways are limitless.

UTS Juris Doctor – Connected learning and entrepreneurship transcript

I always wanted to do something bigger than myself, to help others, and to maybe even change the world.\ Studying the Juris Doctor at UTS was a truly meaningful step in that direction.

I wasn't just surrounded by students, I was completely immersed with professionals, with real life experiences from diverse backgrounds.\ Nurses, doctors, accountants, scientists — all wanting to learn and to make a difference.

While I was working in law firms, I found a new inspiration that pushed me down the path of entrepreneurship.\ Having a Juris Doctor degree made that transition so much easier, as it meant I didn't have to start from scratch.\ I knew how to set up a business structure, write my own contracts and grant applications, be analytical in my thinking while making important connections, and give myself legal advice to steer my business productively.

Today, my business 'Savvy Beverages' is sold in stores all over Australia, and we've expanded globally into international markets with the help of UTS Startups.

When I enrolled in the course, I didn't know I would start a business years later.\ The friendships, connections and skills you gain really set you up for success no matter what career path you choose.

Studying the Juris Doctor has been the ultimate training ground for me to become the person that I am today.

Juris Doctor – Practical, pragmatic and industry focused transcript

I really enjoy how the law can be applied, how it can problem solve and how you can come up with creative solutions to challenging issues.\ From the first year of the Juris Doctor, I was inspired by my lecturers and tutors to think differently about everyday issues impacting society, through to complex legal problems.

The Juris Doctor at UTS is practical, pragmatic and industry-focused, and that's what I was really looking for.\ I quickly realised the value of gaining legal knowledge and the various career pathways I could take.

After graduating, I did a graduate program with the Department of Defence, where I could apply my legal studies to real world situations and give back to the community.\ I later moved on and worked with one of the big four consulting firms.

Today, I work at a global professional services company that offers innovative technology and solutions for clients, which are at the crest of the wave for the application of technology law.\ The problems we're trying to solve and help our clients with are often emerging for the first time.

As a technology lawyer, you have to be creative and test your knowledge every day.\ Behind all technology, there's a complex and evolving legal ecosystem — and I'm so excited to be part of it.
