## Protect the species and ecosystems that hold the key to our planet’s survival

Our Environment and Marine courses combine general science subjects with specialist study in areas such as aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, plant physiology, biodiversity conservation, wildlife management and environmental protection, among others.

## Study options

## Why study Environmental Science?

Our Environment and Marine courses combine general science subjects with specialist study in areas such as aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, plant physiology, biodiversity conservation, wildlife management and environmental protection, among others. Depending on your choice of degree, you’ll also build highly practical skills in areas like urban resilience, geographic information systems and remote sensing.

These degrees will prepare you to work at the forefront of environmental protection and remediation where qualified scientists are more in demand than ever.

In the face of a global climate crisis, environmental science expertise is increasingly in demand. The Master of Science (Environmental Consultancy and Conservation) is a leading postgraduate environmental restoration course. It combines advanced scientific training and fieldwork with fundamental management skills, preparing you for consulting and leadership roles across this critical area of practice.

At UTS, you’ll learn to identify and mitigate a range of ecological challenges, as well as to rehabilitate the marine and terrestrial environments that are crucial to the health of our planet. You’ll gain theoretical and hands-on experience with coastal protection, land contamination mitigation, wildlife handling and water quality testing and analysis, among others, and you can also tailor your studies through your choice of general or specialist management electives.

## Get inspired

Get your boots muddy — or your feet wet — with leading UTS Science degrees in environmental and marine biology. You’ll combine extensive fieldwork experience with scientific training and support from leading environmental practitioners, preparing you for consulting and leadership roles in an uncertain climate future. Benefit from industry connections through co-designed curriculum, guest lectures and seminar series, and industry-relevant projects.

I think UTS is preparing me for what I want to do, which is being a marine scientist and preparing me well for being able to study marine habitats and actually make a difference later on.

\

Well, it's all about generating knowledge and creating awareness for the public.

\

If no one knows the issues going on, there is no chance of fixing it.

So it's really important for marine scientists to take a stand, educate everyone and generate this passion for the environment.

## Frequently asked questions

Use the buttons to expand or collapse the section.

- ### What’s the difference between biomedical and medical science majors and named degrees?

One is a specialised or named degree, such as the Bachelor of Medical Science, while the other is a Bachelor of Science degree with specialised majors.

The Medical Science degree allows you to choose from 2 majors and likely requires a higher selection rank for entry. The Bachelor of Science offers more flexibility if you want to change majors.
- ### What’s the difference between the Bachelor of Molecular Biotechnology and the Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology)?

The Bachelor of Molecular Biotechnology offers majors in Medical Biotechnology and Environmental Biotechnology, as well as more cross-disciplinary subjects in both business and law.

The Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology is a more flexible degree. If you're not sure what you want to specialise in, the Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology – or any of its majors – is a safe bet.
- ### Can I transfer to UTS from a different university?

Yes, although you will need to apply. Application information is available for domestic applicants and international applicants.

If you transfer to UTS, you may be able to receive credit towards your new course based on your previous study through [recognition of prior learning (RPL)](https://www.uts.edu.au/for-students/admissions-entry/recognition-of-prior-learning).
- ### I have a previous qualification in a different field – will this support my application?

If you have studied a previous qualification, it can be considered for admissions purposes. Visit [admissions and eligibility](https://www.uts.edu.au/for-students/admissions-entry/eligibility) for more information.

You may also be eligible for credit towards your new course through [recognition of prior learning (RPL)](https://www.uts.edu.au/for-students/admissions-entry/recognition-of-prior-learning).
- ### Can I apply even if I don’t have the required selection rank?

Yes, we have numerous entry schemes and admissions pathways to support applications from students who would otherwise not meet the course entry requirements.

For more information, visit [admissions and entry](https://www.uts.edu.au/for-students/admissions-entry).
- ### Can I defer my study?

Whether you can defer depends on several factors. Some courses do not allow you to defer, and you cannot defer if you commence your course in the Spring or Summer session.

Visit [deferring an offer](https://www.uts.edu.au/commencing-students/essential-information/deferring-your-course-commencement) for more information.
- ### Is it possible to study part time?

Domestic applicants can study part time by enrolling in a less than full-time study load. Visit [study load](https://www.uts.edu.au/current-students/managing-your-course/your-enrolment/study-load) for more information.

If you’re an international student on a student visa, you must maintain a full-time study load. If you want to study part time, apply for [permission to reduce your study load](https://www.uts.edu.au/current-students/managing-your-course/classes-and-assessment/academic-progression/international-student-requirements/permission-reduce-study-load).
- ### Is PLT offered online or on campus?

From **2026 onwards**, PLT will consist of a blended course with:

  - **Compulsory on-campus workshops**, typically in intensive blocks, including assessments
  - Online learning components (readings, discussion board).

  \
It will **not** be entirely online due to accreditation requirements.
- ### Can I study a UTS subject if I’m a student at another university?

Yes, although you will need to apply. If you’re studying at a different university, cross-institutional study allows you to enrol in UTS subjects and receive credit for them towards your course.

More information is available at [cross-institutional study](https://www.uts.edu.au/for-students/admissions-entry/how-to-apply/cross-institutional-study-applications).
- ### Can I register for a tour of the UTS campus?

Yes, UTS runs free campus tours throughout the year.

[Register for a UTS campus tour](https://www.uts.edu.au/study/undergraduate/our-courses/events-and-info-sessions/register-uts-campus-tour) to secure a spot.
