I really enjoy how the law can be applied, how it can problem solve, and how you can come up with creative solutions to challenging issues.
I'd always planned to do law when I was young, and I'd reached a time in my life and career where I was ready for a new challenge, ready to do something for me, something with real-world impact.
I always wanted to do something bigger than myself, to help others, and maybe even to help change the world. Studying the Juris Doctor at UTS was a truly meaningful step in that direction.
I really appreciated studying law as a mature age student. UTS really embraces the diversity of their Juris Doctor cohort and is flexible with how you arrange your study.
I wasn't just surrounded by students; I was completely immersed with professionals with real-life experiences from diverse backgrounds. Nurses, doctors, accountants, scientists all wanting to learn and make a difference.
From the first year of the Juris Doctor, I was inspired by my lecturers and tutors to think differently about everyday issues impacting society, through to complex legal problems.
Being on campus is engaging and inspiring, and it's easy to find other students who are as motivated and passionate as you are.
The Juris Doctor at UTS is pragmatic and future focused. From the outset, I knew how relevant the degree is to the real world, and it gave me\ the skills I needed to become a technology lawyer. Problems we're trying to solve and help our clients with are often emerging for the first time.
When I enrolled in the course, I didn't know I would start a business years later, but studying the Juris Doctor made the transition so much easier. It has been the ultimate training ground for me to become the person I am today.
The Juris Doctor has shown me how I can leverage my experience in a new career path, and that the pathways are limitless.

UTS offers two intakes each year to the Juris Doctor (JD) — Autumn (February/March) and Spring (July/August). Applications typically open six to eight months before the session starts and close once places are filled.
-
Am I eligible to apply for the UTS Juris Doctor (JD)?
Yes - you can apply for a UTS Juris Doctor (JD) if you hold a recognised bachelor’s degree in any discipline. A previous law qualification isn’t required. Selection is based on academic merit, usually your GPA/WAM from your prior studies. - ### What WAM or GPA do I need for admission to the JD?
For a Juris Doctor (JD) at UTS there’s no fixed cut-off, but most successful applicants achieve a credit to distinction average (65–75% WAM). GPA will vary, dependent on what criteria you meet. Work experience and a strong personal statement can also support your application. - ### What is the difference between the JD and the JD + Graduate Certificate in Professional Legal Practice (C04320)?
The combined JD + Graduate Certificate in Professional Legal Practice at UTS includes both your academic qualification and Practical Legal Training (PLT). It’s the most direct pathway to becoming a practising lawyer in NSW. - ### Can I study the Juris Doctor online?
The Juris Doctor (JD) degree is NOT delivered fully online. This degree can be completed by day or evening, in a part-time or full-time capacity. Some subjects are offered in weekend or intensive blocks. While many subjects offer options for online study, some subjects do require on-campus attendance. - ### What are the class hours and study options for JD?
Most of our Juris Doctor Sydney subjects are taught in the evening (after 6 pm) to support working professionals. Full-time: 3–4 subjects (approx. 9–12 contact hours/week). Part-time: 1–2 subjects (approx. 3–6 contact hours/week). Some subjects are offered in weekend or intensive blocks. - ### Are Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) available?
Yes, a limited number of Juris Doctor CSP places are available to eligible domestic students each intake. If you receive a Juris Doctor CSP, you can defer payment through HECS-HELP. View fees and CSP information - ### When can I apply for the Juris Doctor (JD) at UTS?
UTS offers two intakes each year to the Juris Doctor (JD) — Autumn (February/March) and Spring (July/August). Applications typically open six to eight months before the session starts and close once places are filled. - ### Can I receive credit for previous law subjects or study?
If you’ve completed equivalent postgraduate law subjects elsewhere, you can apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Credit is assessed individually once you submit official transcripts and subject outlines. - ### Can I study in Summer or finish early through the Accelerated Pathway?
If you're enrolled in the combined JD + Graduate Certificate in Professional Legal Practice, you will study in Summer enabling you to complete your JD and Practical Legal Training in as little as three years - the fastest route to practice in NSW. Studying in Summer is also available for students enrolled in the JD program. - ### How do I apply and what documents do I need?
Apply directly to UTS online — no UAC code required. You’ll need:
- Official academic transcripts (PDF format)
