The UTS Bachelor of Design in Product Design will give you the capabilities to create forward-thinking products that are socially and ecologically responsible. From crafting your first concept to prototyping advanced designs, this degree will teach you to develop, test and manufacture solution-focused products. Through studio-based learning, you’ll complete projects of increasing depth and complexity and acquire the strategic and critical thinking skills to lead product innovation.

You’ll study new and emerging technologies, get hands-on in digital and fabrication workshops and specialise your learning in your area of choice. This will help you become a confident, competent and capable design professional, ready to carve out your unique path in this exciting and ever-changing industry.

What you’ll study

In this program, you’ll complete core Product Design subjects, building your foundational capabilities in areas such as socially and ecologically responsible design and advanced manufacturing systems. Your general design studies will provide a vital knowledge base for your future career, developing your capacity for design thinking and research.

You’ll also hone your collaborative abilities with a Transdisciplinary elective and get the chance to specialise your knowledge through your choice of discipline-specific electives, which cover a broad array of topics, including AI-assisted design, digital manufacturing, circularity and bio-derived materials.

  4. 1 : Transdisciplinary elective

  5. First year

You’ll begin with core subjects covering foundational skills such as 3D forms and product design communication, as well as vital theory and historical perspectives. You’ll learn to accurately construct physical artefacts in our dedicated fabrication workshops and computer labs. 2. #### Second year

You’ll cover areas like product engineering, ethical and sustainable design, user experience and AI. You’ll curate your learning with electives, and you can even apply for Global Studio electives, which blend creative practice, international travel and cultural learning opportunities. 3. #### Third year

Your final year focuses on topics including interactive and integrated technologies, advanced manufacturing and professional communication. You’ll also complete a self-directed major product design project, establishing critical competencies for employment or entry into the Product Design honours program.

First year

Shaped by industry standards, Studio 5A is a permanent, immersive space for visual communication and product design students.

The fabrication workshop is a large, well-equipped space where students and staff can safely build custom handmade models.

The photomedia studio is equipped with everything you need for professional-grade photography, including lighting studios, green screens and darkrooms for traditional black and white photographic printing.

The digital makerspace is Design, Architecture and Building’s hub for 3D printing and laser cutting.

The soft model studio is a space for light-duty construction and assembly of models made from materials such as foam, foamboard, cardboard and balsawood.
