## What you’ll study

You'll begin your Communication studies with core subjects, building your knowledge of this fascinating discipline. Then, your chosen stream will see you specialise your skills, hone your writing and editing capabilities and acquire insight into the publishing profession.

Simultaneously, you'll be undertaking a range of core subjects in Law, covering topics like evidence, remedies, civil practice and torts. You'll also have the chance to investigate the legal world of tomorrow through the Legal Futures and Technologies major or pursue subjects of particular interest through your choice of Law Options.

## Industry accreditation

This course satisfies the academic requirements for admission to the Supreme Court of NSW as a lawyer. Once completed, you will also need to complete a practical legal training program, such as the Graduate Certificate in Professional Legal Practice (available at UTS) to be eligible for admission as a lawyer.

- ### Course description

  This course suits students who are aiming to blend legal expertise with writing prowess, suitable for careers in law, publishing, or writing. By integrating a legal education with hands-on writing, editing, and publishing experience, you'll acquire a comprehensive understanding of storytelling across various media, and meet the academic requirements for admission to legal practice in NSW.

  You will develop a robust skill set, including legal analysis, creative writing, and effective communication. The curriculum includes essential legal subjects, practical writing subjects, elective cross-disciplinary studies, and exposure to legal technology, preparing you for the evolving landscape of the legal profession.

  Through a blend of theoretical learning and practical application, you will be equipped for roles such as media or intellectual property lawyer, editor, publisher, or writer, with the ability to manage legal challenges in creative industries or bring both narrative flair and strong analytic skills to various roles.

  The simultaneous study of a range of legal subjects, from the fundamentals of the law to specialist skills in niche legal disciplines, ensures that students meet the academic requirements for admission to practise law in NSW.

  Elective choices include cross-disciplinary studies in history, communication, media and country studies; specialist legal subjects, such as contracts, entertainment and intellectual property law; and the Legal Futures and Technology major, which provides first-hand experience of the technologies shaping the future of the legal profession.

  Graduates emerge with the high-level creative, analytical and communication skills required to manage the legal aspects of a writing career, or for a legal career in which writing skills can add eloquence and character to their work.

- ### Course duration

  The course is offered on a five-year, full-time basis. Students are required to attend approximately 17 hours of seminars and lectures a week, and may be required to attend evening classes for the law component.
- ### Admission requirements

  Applicants must have completed an Australian Year 12 qualification, Australian Qualifications Framework Diploma, or equivalent Australian or overseas qualification at the required level.

  Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

  IELTS Academic: overall 6.5, writing 6.0
  TOEFL iBT: overall 79, writing 21
  UTS College AE5: Pass
  Pearson PTE: overall 58, writing 50
  Cambridge C1A/C2P: overall 176, writing 169
- ### Domestic course fees

  **2026 Indicative tuition fees for government-supported domestic students**

  All offers for domestic undergraduate students are for [Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP)](https://www.uts.edu.au/current-students/managing-your-course/fees-and-payment/domestic-student-tuition-fees/commonwealth-supported).This means the Australian Government contributes to your education costs, and you pay the remaining tuition fees, known as the [student contribution](https://www.uts.edu.au/for-students/admissions-entry/fees-costs/commonwealth-supported). If eligible, you can defer payment through [HECS-HELP](https://www.uts.edu.au/current-students/managing-your-course/fees-and-payment/domestic-student-tuition-fees/government-help-schemes), or you can choose to pay your fees upfront each session.
