The Anchor Investment Fund (AIF) is a unique, student-managed investment fund at the UTS Business School that provides hands-on money management experience for selected undergraduate students. My research portfolio is in asset management, so I tend to look at investment vehicles, such as mutual funds and super funds, as well as their performance evaluation, fee setting, and investment strategies.

I'm the subject coordinator of the UTS Student Managed Fund, also called the Anchor Investment Fund. This is the UTS official student managed fund, and it is a hands-on, practical experience-based fund that focuses on asset management. It is a fund that is managed by a pool of 15 high-achieving students selected across all faculties at UTS, with a double major in finance.

Now, students in this fund are responsible for formulating recommendations on asset allocation, equity research, portfolio management, and risk management. And they also provide recommendations to an investment advisory committee comprising senior industry leaders and the recommendations once approved, will be then translated into trading orders so that the portfolio can be built and constructed.

The UTS student-managed fund is very unique in the sense that it combines rigorous academic training with internship-based experience in asset allocation, in equity research and portfolio management. So it's very unique in its nature. It's unique also because it really bridges the divide between academic insights and industry practice.

Many of the students involved in this program are actually selected for internships and cadetships at top investment banks, such as JP Morgan, Bank of America, Merrill Lynch. So it's not just about the subject and the training. It’s also about getting exposure to industry practices and being ready for the asset management industry.

Connect with industry
