Jacquie Cowdrey’s journey into civil engineering began with a suggestion from her father, himself a civil engineer, who recognised her practical mindset and logical thinking as perfect attributes for the field.
Understanding the importance of practical experience, Jacquie was drawn to the Women in Engineering and IT (WiEIT) Cooperative Scholarship at UTS. This scholarship offered more than just financial support; it provided invaluable industry connections and internship opportunities.
"The UTS Women in Engineering and IT Co-Op Scholarship really stood out to me because it has those industry connections, so you are guaranteed your internships at really reputable companies that will support you for your career."
Industry experience
Through her scholarship, Jacquie gained hands-on experience in major projects such as the WestConnex motorway project, in commercial and on-site engineering roles.
"This allowed me to apply the skills I learnt in my degree so far. It was an action-packed experience, and it felt great to be part of a real-life project."
Being part of the WiEIT cohort also made Jacquie's transition into UTS smooth. "Our scholarship cohort is very tight-knit, and it’s great to be able to make connections with like-minded women across engineering and IT."

Advice for future WiEIT applicants
Jacquie advises future WiEIT applicants to reflect on their experiences and values, aligning them with those of the WiEIT program. "Show that you are committed, passionate, and ready to give it a red-hot crack."
Aside from her studies, Jacquie is involved in the UTS Elite Tennis team and has participated in the Lucy Mentoring Programme, fully immersing herself in the university's community and opportunities.
Reflecting on her journey, Jacquie would advise her Year 12 self to keep options open and embrace opportunities. "Go with the flow and go in with no expectation. Year 12 is a really stressful time, but honestly, just enjoy it – it goes by so quickly."
