MSU Career Services knows that the transition from military to civilian life is sometimes marked by a lack of understanding on the part of civilian employers as to the ways a military background can translate readily into many workplace environments.
We stand with you, ready to support your pursuit of securing a satisfying “next step.” Make an appointment with a career advisor through Handshake to identify employers who value military experience, create a civilian-friendly resume, and more.
Visit the Center for Veterans and Military-Affiliated Students (CVMAS) to learn more about resources and services designed for student veterans.
Career Advising
Connect with a career advisor to learn more about:
- Assessing your skills and professional interests
- Including your experience as a student veteran on your professional documents (resume, cover letters)
- Gaining additional experience through internships, part-time work, and other professional development opportunities
- Developing a job search strategy, including identifying employers who value military experience
- Building a professional network that utilizes veteran mentors
- Preparing for interviews by highlighting some of your unique skills
- Applying to graduate/professional school
Appointments can be made via Handshake, where you can schedule time with a general or discipline-specific career advisor from the Career Services Network.
Connect with Professional Organizations and Resources
Student veterans have a number of ways to seek out guidance and support. Several ways to get started:
Identifying Transferable Skills and Employer Programs for Veterans: Check out the Veterans Job Matcher to identify career paths that might be a good match for military skills and learn about wages, education requirements, and outlooks in identified fields. Many employers (such as Time Warner Cable, GE, and Hewlett Packard) also offer employment programs for veterans worth considering.
Professional Organizations and Job Search Resources: Military Friendly, the U.S. Dept. of Labor’s HIREVets Medallion Program, FourBlock, American Corporate Partners, the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs’ Veterans Employment Center, Hire Heroes USA, Recruit Military, and the Veteran Jobs Mission offer a robust range of resources and job search support.
