The One Health framework is described. This framework is used to outline the nature of the interaction between the host, the pathogen and the environment. The nature of the interaction between the wildlife and domestic animal hosts, the pathogen and the environment, with emphasis on the risk to human epidemiology is also described. Antibiotic resistant microbes will be discussed. Worked examples of zoonotic diseases will include Covid-19, badgers and tuberculosis, and wildfowl and influenza. The potential of wildlife to act as a reservoir for human diseases i.e. zoonoses, will be discussed. Finally, the evolution of the One Health framework to include management of biodiversity for the benefit of animal and public health will also be outlined.

### What will I learn?

###### Learning Outcomes:

1. to understand the concept of the One Health framework.\
2. to understand how the One Health framework helps us to appreciate the nature, components and role of epidemiology in disease prevention and control.\
3. the utility and limitations of different diagnostic and investigative approaches.\
4. to describe the biology and epidemiology of selected zoonoses in an integrated fashion, with particular reference to Ireland and zoonoses and of international importance, perform risk analyses and produce management recommendations for this group of diseases.\
5. to understand the relationship between zoonoses emergence and biodiversity.

###### Approaches to Teaching and Learning:

Using delivered course content material as basic level of knowledge, in class problems are given to students to use as self assessment markers with feedback provided through discussion. This is achieved through active/task-based learning; peer and group work; lectures; reflective learning.
