The Graduate Faculty are responsible for teaching graduate-level courses, designing the academic content of graduate degree programs, and supervising the writing and defense of graduate student research in the form of theses and dissertations. ([Full Graduate Faculty Members Policy Information](https://academiccatalog.umd.edu/graduate/policies/faculty-members/))

## Graduate Faculty Membership Categories

- **Full Members** - TTK faculty. *Do not require a nomination*.
- **Associate or Graduate Teaching Members** - PTK faculty, research professors, clinical professors, lecturers, adjunct faculty, etc. *Require a nomination.*
- **Special Members** - Experts not associated with UMD who will serve on a student committee. *Require a nomination*.

Graduate faculty membership is part of the **Primary Academic Appointment**. The Membership term is 5 years. If the Primary Academic Appointment ends, membership will end.

## Required Nomination Materials

1) Nomination letter from the head of the unit, 2) Nominee's CV, 3) Graduate Faculty vote, and 4) The Nomination Questionnaire.

## Submitting a Nomination

The process varies depending on the nominee's status in Workday. Review the [Elevate UMCP Graduate Faculty Nomination Process Guide](https://support.umd.edu/esc?id=kb_article_view&table=kb_knowledge&sys_id=8392ef6547de72946543bb2c016d43c6&spa=1) to learn how to submit a nomination through Workday.

- The unit holding the faculty member's **Primary Academic Appointment** handles the nomination process.
- The Academic Analyst, HR Analyst, or the Department Graduate Program Coordinator will **"Create"** or **"Update"** the **Primary Academic Appointment** to launch the **Nomination Questionnaire Task**.
- The **Nomination Questionnaire Task** is sent to the unit’s Department Graduate Program Coordinator. This job aid outlines the [Graduate Faculty Nomination Questionnaire](https://itsupport.umd.edu/kb_view.do?sysparm_article=KB0017326).

## Additional Resources

All Department Graduate Program Coordinators have access to **RPT824**. This report shows a full list of **active Graduate Faculty memberships** across campus. The report can be filtered by name, UID, unit, etc. \
*Search for RPT824 in the Workday Search Bar.*

## Reactiving Membership for Adjunct Faculty

For faculty who work for a short period of time (e.g., just the fall semester), Graduate Faculty Membership becomes inactive when there is no Primary Academic Appointment. If they return, membership will need to reactivated.
