## About us
We investigate the way that individuals’ beliefs, dispositions, actions and aspirations are intertwined with their immediate social groups and their wider culture. Our researchers focus on contemporary social problems, applying their theoretical and methodological knowledge with a view to enhancing people’s lives.

## Research impact
Our research findings have informed policy, underpinned strategy development for a variety of stakeholders and have helped change people’s lives for the better. You can find more information about 3 current projects below, each of which have impact at their heart. They are run by Prof. Guida de Abreu, Dr. Adam Baimel and Prof. Vincent Connelly.
- Prof. de Abreu is leading a strand of an international research project aiming to improve the lives of migrant children who act as translators for their peers, family, and the local community.
- Dr Baimel is examining how religious meaning systems are adapting to the climate crisis.
- Prof. Connelly is investigating the experiences of front-line NHS staff who were working in teams during the Covid-19 pandemic.

| **[ALPHABETICA: Activating Learning Paths - Holistic Arts-Based Education and Training for Inclusion an](https://alphabetica-project.eu/project/background)** ALPHABETICA aims to provide effective solutions that allow children and young people at risk of poverty or social exclusion to access arts and arts-based education. The wider project, which received just under €3,000,000 from the Horizon Europe fund, is led by Professor Rachele Antonini at the University of Bologna and involves 14 institutions from 9 different countries – one of which will be Oxford Brookes University. Professor Guida de Abreu will work in collaboration with Professor Sarah Crafter and Dr. Nelli Stavropoulou at The Open University. The team in the UK will focus on how participation in art has the potential to enable children and young people from disadvantaged communities to imagine new ways of caring for better futures. Art may feel inaccessible for some young people, therefore the project team will work with young people in participatory ways to co-create art that is meaningful to them. This intervention will take place in a formal setting (school) and out-of-school community setting (local library). It will involve working with 3-18 year olds, teachers, library staff members, and families. | [Professor Guida de Abreu](https://www.brookes.ac.uk/profiles/staff/guida-de-abreu) | [Horizon Europe](https://cinea.ec.europa.eu/programmes/horizon-europe_en#:~:text=Horizon Europe is the EU's,runs parts of the programme "Horizon Europe") | From: January 2025 Until: June 2028 |
