Campus of the University of Vienna

The 96,000 m² site of the former General Hospital became the property of the University of Vienna in 1988 through a donation by the City of Vienna and was opened up by numerous new access points and passageways. Today, the University of Vienna campus is not only a place of study and work, but also a popular green oasis for those seeking relaxation and a venue for congresses, exhibitions, festivals, sporting events, and much more.

A guided tour of the courtyards provides insight into the diverse history of the buildings. Visitors learn about their use as a poorhouse, military hospital, and maternity hospital, as well as the development of the university clinics and their current use as a modern science center for research and teaching.](https://event.univie.ac.at/en/tours/ready-for-a-discovery-tour/campus-of-the-university-of-vienna/) - [### u:japan lectures

Biodiversity in the heart of the city: a new open-air exhibition on the University of Vienna campus highlights biodiversity and invites visitors to rediscover the campus as a living ecosystem.

About the exhibition

C.Ehrenhuber

When the University of Vienna campus opened in 1998, the 23 new entrances and passageways were named after important figures and equipped with plaques detailing their biographies. Those honored by the Gates of Remembrance have gained greater visibility since fall 2024, as the content of the commemorative plaques has been revised and their design updated.

With its “car-free campus” initiative, the University of Vienna is making a significant contribution to sustainability and environmental protection in the city. To achieve this goal, since June 1, 2021, no cars or motorcycles may be parked in unauthorized parking areas on campus. In accordance with the applicable courtyard regulations, access for loading activities to Courtyard 1 is only permitted from Monday to Saturday until 11:30 a.m.

We thank you for your understanding and support of this measure in the interests of environmental protection.
