# Campus of the University of Vienna
The 96,000 m² site of the former General Hospital became the property of the University of Vienna in 1988 through a donation by the City of Vienna and was opened up by numerous new access points and passageways. Today, the University of Vienna campus is **not only a place of study and work**, but also a **popular green oasis** for those seeking relaxation and a **venue** for congresses, exhibitions, festivals, sporting events, and much more.

A **guided tour of the courtyards** provides insight into the **diverse history** of the buildings. When the University of Vienna campus opened in 1998, the **23 new entrances and passageways were named after important figures** and equipped with plaques detailing their biographies. Those honored by the **Gates of Remembrance** have gained greater visibility since fall 2024, as the content of the commemorative plaques has been revised and their design updated.

With its “car-free campus” initiative, the University of Vienna is making a **significant contribution to sustainability and environmental protection** in the city. To achieve this goal, **since June 1, 2021, no cars or motorcycles** may be parked in unauthorized parking areas on campus. In accordance with the applicable courtyard regulations, **access for loading activities** to Courtyard 1 is only permitted from Monday to Saturday until 11:30 a.m.
