# How the hum of a fridge can tell the time

Electrical network frequency analysis (ENF) can extract a surprising amount of information from the noise emitted by many of our electronics. ENF analysts can take a recording of that hum, and tell you the time and date the recording was made. **Nasir Memon**, vice dean for student and academic affairs and member of the [Center for Cybersecurity](http://cyber.nyu.edu) at NYU Tandon, noted that, in his endeavors to create an ENF analyzing technology, he has to be mindful of its implications on privacy.
