## Overview

Physics and Gender is an interdisciplinary course that examines how gender norms and identities shape the field of physics. You will analyse historical and contemporary examples to understand how scientific knowledge is influenced by social, cultural and political contexts. The course introduces key concepts from gender studies and science studies, and encourages critical reflection on the role of physics in society.

This course provides valuable insights for students pursuing careers in science. It fosters critical thinking and interdisciplinary understanding, which are useful in both academic and professional contexts. The course also prepares students for further studies in gender studies, science studies or related fields.

The course is suitable for students in physics, natural sciences or anyone interested in the relationship between science and gender. The course can be taken as part of a physics programme or as a stand-alone course.

- Introduction to gender theory and science studies

## Teaching and learning

Teaching is conducted through lectures, seminars and group discussions. You will engage with academic texts, participate in critical debates and complete written assignments. The course emphasises active learning and encourages students to reflect on their own experiences and assumptions.

Assessment is based on participation, written reflections and a final essay.

All teaching is in English.

## Requirements and selection

### Prerequisites

Admission to the course requires at least 90 credits in physics, physics didactics, mathematics or an equivalent discipline for example the three first semesters on an undergraduate education in physics, or an equivalent discipline and English 6/B.

### Selection criteria

Seats are allocated according to: The general average (GPA) of your higher secondary school leaving certificate: 20 %, The Swedish national university aptitude test: 10 %, number of previous ECTS at application deadline (up to 165): 70 %.

## Tuition fees

### Tuition fees for non-EU/EEA citizens

Citizens of countries outside:

- The European Union (EU)
- The European Economic Area (EEA) and
- Switzerland

are required to pay tuition fees. You pay an instalment of the tuition fee in advance of each \
semester.
