# Assistantships

A graduate assistantship (GA) a set of duties performed by a graduate student that [results in a stipend and compensation](https://reg.msu.edu/AcademicPrograms/Text.aspx?Section=111#s358 "results in a stipend and compensation").
**Assistantships are offered by colleges and departments across Michigan State University and are not offered directly through the Graduate School**. Students should check for opportunities at their [college or department](https://admissions.msu.edu/academics/majors-degrees-programs?f-academic_level=Doctorate%7CGraduate+certificate%7CMasters).
Graduate assistant appointments fall into one of three categories:
- Research assistants
- Teaching assistants represented by the Graduate Employees Union
- Teach assistants not represented by the MSU – Graduate Employees Union Collective Bargaining Agreement
